What my boss did today... / Re: BS
« on: April 12, 2011, 08:31:47 PM »
I don't have access to my time from home, but I'd put a solid guess that of my time each month, approximately half is billable. Approximately a third of the rest is non-billable marketing. The other two-thirds, non-billable admin.

And doing my boss's (non-deadline driven) non-billable is more important than doing another attorney's (deadline-driven) billable.

The general principle of paralegals doing their own bills instead of the admin doing it.

Mmmm...juicy non-billable.

I hate when attorneys expect you to read their mind and imagine what they actually want.

Frex:

'Write up something like this, LostParalegal. I want you to include X, Y, and Z.'

*writes, including X, Y, and Z. Takes to attorney*

'What the hell is this? Why did you put in Y? I want G and D, not Y'

'Oh...uh...okay.'

*rewrites. Takes to attorney*

'Where the hell is Y?'

Forget MS Office...

why did it take our office until now to upgrade our mid-90s timekeeping software?

"Here, do [attorney-level work] project"

"Okay. How do I do it?"

"Just do it."

"Uh...okay."

"And get it right. Don't f*** it up. It's my bar accreditation at stake."

"Sure thing."

*frantically search the system files to find anything at all similar so I can work backwards and get it half-right in twice the time it would take an attorney to do it right*

Heh.

Every day, I'm told in some manner, verbal or written, that you are a f***-up or are constantly making mistakes, or that no attorneys will give me billable work because I'll f*** it up, or that I can't write for s***, and then give me attorney-level projects with no guidance whatsoever (and mind you, I'm at <1 year paralegal experience with no paralegal certificate), and get upset when they're not done perfectly.

There are only a couple of people in our office, attorney or paralegal, who are *not* looking for their next job.

Whine Here / Going back to work after long weekend

I took two personal days at the end of last week (for good reason, to meet up with high school friend and all).

I finished the project the boss assigned me to do by the end of Wednesday, by the end of Wednesday.

I took home the work from Cool Attorney (who really wouldn't have minded if I hadn't taken it home), and am almost finished it.

But my job involves...well, it's such a constant nightmare that I am actually dreading going in tomorrow and checking my email. Boss can be...temperamental.

And Boss appears to be on a vendetta to...well, break me. Emotionally, mentally, you name it.

Literally the only reason I have not just quit and put myself broke is because of the other paralegals and Cool Attorney (who lets crying paralegals hang out in his office, without reservation, and even brings them water)

*raises hand*

Because I'm locked into a lease for another 7 months and have no savings upon which to fall back?
