I feel like a rockstar paralegal today!
« on: September 09, 2011, 11:32:04 AM »

So the plaintiff in a case we have going to trial soon has been lying his ass off.  And about stuff that doesn't even matter to the case.  So I did some digging & some research & proved he was lying about his military background!  We brought this up at his depo and the guy totally denied it.  A little while after the depo and we get a call saying he finally confessed to his attorney that he lied.  Now they want to settle for cheap.  Go me!  :)  I love it when fun stuff like that happens, it makes life so much more interesting!

You are a super rockstar in my estimation.  Catching people in lies is awesome.  What a way to start your weekend!! 8)

Well, thank ya Corporate!  You're all kinds of awesome yourself!  I have to toot my own horn again.  Not only did they want to settle it for cheap, but we got them to drop it all together so we wouldn't go after their lying asses for costs!  Ha!  I hope my boss totally remembers this when it's time for reviews in a couple of months.   8)

Momalegal....

I totally feel your vibe. You rock. It rocks to add something substantial.

(I did some independent research on the plaintiff in one of our cases, found he was...dubiously honest. In my case, it was his responses regarding his felony record in interrogatories, and his previous litigation history in same.  My "independent research" plays a not-totally-insubstantial part of our Rule 11 Sanctions Motion....that I got to help draft, and totally kicks-ass)

I was just sent a file to review yesterday.  Seems our little injured worker who claims he is totally disabled due to an ankle injury and cannot work and needs SSD spends his time off RUNNING 7 MILES everyday.  Gotta love surveillance video.  I am so totally reporting his sorry butt to Social Security....not to mention what the work comp carrier is going to do to him.  Oh...and his employment....done.

I guess I just don't understand why people continue to lie.  You will get caught.

Yes, it does!  Way to go to both of you!  I used to do more surveillance when I did personal injury defense.  Some of those tapes were hilarious.  "I can't work but I'm going to work on my car in the driveway all day, crawling under it and bending over the engine, etc., etc."   I love busting liars!

I'm with you Corporate, I don't get it.  Especially when it has nothing to do with the case, like in our situation.  My boss thought he was probably half truthful, simply because it didn't make sense to him to make something up completely.  People with huge egos don't have to make sense.  (And frequently they don't!)
