Upgrading Software

Why on earth is my firm so afraid to upgrade from MS Word 2002?  There's been something like 3 new versions since then, but we're still limping along with that golden moldie.  9 years is an eternity in software terms.

HSF:
If it's not a cost issue, I blame lazy. Microsoft software is very expensive though (unless you're part of the MAPS program), so I suspect it's lazy. Having said that, the only real feature change that matters in the 2010 version is the file format change. MS Word has so many damn features that a "normal" user won't use it's not even funny. Maybe a firm has older computers that they'd need to upgrade as well increasing the cost of an upgrade?

SpaceMonkey:
I don't know about your firm, but we've got a lot of plug-ins into our Word that the firm has meticulously installed over the years. I'm not sure if these obviously expensive plugins are compatible with future Word upgrades, but, like HSF said, the newer versions have all those features that most people would never use. Funny enough, I never use the firm's plug-ins, nor do I know anyone else who uses them.

LostParalegal:
Forget MS Office...

why did it take our office until now to upgrade our mid-90s timekeeping software?

Momalegal:
It took my firm hiring a company to do an "IT audit" before they would upgrade our 20th century PCs and upgrade Windows and Word to the most current versions.  We were MANY versions behind.  It was embarrassing - experts would email me documents in .docx format and we couldn't open them.   They had to spend a bunch of unnecessary $ on an audit before listening to the staff, who had told them the same thing.
