*A client just got finished signing her petition, on on her way out stopped to ask me a question in my office…

Client: “Paralegal, you did Criminal Law for a while right?”

Me: “Yes.  Is everything ok?”

Client: “I need some advice.” ”  I had $2000 in cash in my wallet when it was stolen. If I tell the police how much was in it, will they give it to me?”

Me: “You mean, if you tell them you had $2000 in cash stolen, will they just give you $2000?”

Client: “Yes! Will they give it to me?”

Me: “I don’t think it works that way. If they manage to recover your wallet and the money is still inside they would probably return it to you, but I don’t think that happens very often.”

Client: “Oh.”

*long pause*

Client: “What if I told them it was $200? Do you think they would give me that much?”

Why are these people getting the benefit of bankruptcy protection? None of these people appear to deserve it.

Of course not. These are the clients that live in $450,000 houses and drive cars I can only dream of owning one day.
If they can have a feasible ch. 13 plan, they can file.

Sure. Makes total sense that these people would expect the cops to just fork over $2,000. They’re entitled, right?

All of my clients are entitled to mansions, cars they can’t afford, etc.
Why wouldn’t the police hand them $2000? Makes perfect sense in their world.

Sad thing is she will also probably file an insurance claim for the “lost” money. By the way, who the hell carries that much money around in their wallet? I don’t think I have ever had that much cash at one time in my whole life!

In my experience (which is not as much a Paralegal’s), many people who file bankruptcy could have avoided it if they would have stuck to a budget.

I wonder if I told the police I lost the exact amount I need for a new car, would they give it to me?
